SNH - Protecting itself or Nature ?

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Is Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) more concerned with protecting its’ own identity than it is in protecting nature in an attempt to avoid being merged with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

In an attempt win backing from Ministers, it appears to be trying to aggressively align itself with the SNP government’s priorities for sustainable growth by relaxing its opposition to large scale commercial developments.

In a review of corporate strategy SNH chairman Andrew Thin said he was neither a conservationist nor an environmentalist; this has caused consternation among some of his staff and provoked strong criticism from many Scottish conservation organizations.

In a SNH newsletter he gave the following response to those who criticised his strategy “…The idea that there may be a contradiction or even a conflict between caring for our natural heritage and increasing its relevance to the everyday needs of the Scottish people must surely be fundamentally flawed.”

Well that clearly explains his position ……….. doesn’t it ?
