In a recent meeting one of the catching sector representatives came out with the following :
“In the fishing industry there is considerable antagonism towards environmentalists, NGOs and the general environmental lobby. That is neither supportable nor appropriate, with the marine bills coming up and just the general changed view of the public”

5% bycatch limit surprises industry

Update 17/02/08
Mike Park, the executive chairman of the Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association continues to argue that the 5% bycatch rule is “without a shadow of a doubt” causing discards to mount - he also asserted the UK should argue strongly for an amendment to the regulation as more detailed analysis is required.

Another Parliamentary Answer

John Scott (Ayr) (Con): To ask the Scottish Executive what quantities of fish have been discarded annually since 2003 by the small mesh nephrops trawl fishery in the Clyde area and of what species the bulk of these discards were composed.
