Sustainable haddock farming ?
SUSTAINABLY farmed haddock could soon be on the plates of UK consumers thanks to Argyll-based Viking Fish Farms.
It is anticipated that the production of haddock in the UK could be around 5,000 tonnes per annum.
Unlike cod farming where the feed is based on fish meal and oil, Viking plans to use an alternative feed using cereal proteins and are conducting further trials and testing of the new feed.
If successful, not only could this open up new market areas for haddock, but it will ensure a far more sustainable operation than fish meal based farming and could also open up a major new market for traditional farmers who grow the cereals.
