Scallop Association joins SFF

The Scallop Association has joined the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF); the Association has about 80 members, plus 15 processor and two diving members.

Apparently the Assocaition it is joining the SFF to get better representation for the scallop industry and to ensure it’s voice is heard at the highest level by taking advantage of the SFF’s expertise in protecting the interests of the fishing industry at both national and European level.

The association will also be heavily involved in the consultation process for the new Scottish Fisheries Scallop Strategy that is currently being developed.

The SFF say they are delighted that the Scallop Association are joining as they feel the scallop sector is an extremely important part of the fishing industry, which has signaled its commitment to responsible fishing and sustainable development.

John Hermse for the association indicated that tackling environmental issues was a major concern and that it would be a priority this year for the association to investigate ways of minimising their environmental footprint.

How committed they are we will wait and see; in a meeting back in June 2006, Mr Hermse expressed his enthusiasm for united action to protect the interests of fishermen against the biggest threat to their survival, the “Green lobby”.
