• Catch and Release

  

  
  Catch and release guidelines may be found on this page. Handle a fish carefully, take your photo, release it quickly and help ensure Fish for the Future.

• Discards

  Discarding occurs when boats decide to dispose of fish which they catch but cannot land or derive income from, or when they have caught more fish than they are allowed to land, or they discard the less valuable fish in order to make more space for more valuable fish.
  
  A million tonnes of fish and other sea creatures caught in the North Sea are discarded every year according to the WWF.

• Report to the SFPA

  You can use this web page to report any kind of fisheries related activity you think might be suspicious to the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency.

  If you are out and about or would rather speak to someone about any suspicious activity simply call 0845 270 3990 which is continually manned.

  The report can be anonymous if you wish but if you give contact details it will help if any clarification is required.

• Dr Borg on the CFP

  EU fisheries commissioner Joe Borg on the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) -

  It has undermined fishery sustainability; it doesn't encourage responsible behaviour by fishermen or politicians; the management tools reward narrow minded, short term decision making.

  SSACN's view -

  Narrow minded, short term parochial decision making by the same politicians ensures no change to the CFP.

• Why Join SSACN

  Many species of fish, once very common in Scottish waters are now commercially extinct.
  
  15+ million fish are discarded annually in the Clyde Nephrops fishery.
  
  500+ million fish are discarded annually in the waters around Scotland.
  
  EU fleets discard 2+ BILLION fish annually in the North Sea.
  
  Four species of shark - spurdog, porbeagle, common skate and tope urgently need management plans to stop their rapid decline.

  Established in 1997, the Shark Trust is a UK charity dedicated to the study, management and conservation of sharks, skates, rays and chimaera.
