Action on non-quota discards ?

SSACN are attending a meeting today where Cabinet Secretary Lochhead is expected to announce a major step towards reducing discards, including those of non-quota species.

Apparently there is to be a discards ’summit’ at the end of this month which will bring together industry representatives, scientists, conservationists and government in order to discuss measures to dramatically reduce discards.

Update - Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead confirmed that thge ‘Discards Summit’ will take place in Edinburgh on September 25.

Give Fish A Chance

SSACN’s Give Fish A Chance (GFAC) initiative reflects the fact that many anglers, whilst enjoying their sport and occasionally taking a fish for the table, are keen to do what they can to ensure the minimal impact to the environment and to the fish themselves.

Give Fish A Chance consists of a series of advisory notes and voluntary measures to help anglers better understand the issues associated with taking and handling fish.

Fish sustainably, only take fish for the table which have had a chance to reproduce and have respect for those you do catch.

Little known fact

Gourdon on the north east coast near Aberdeen was one of the last centres of traditional sma' line fishing where, up until the late 1970s, there was a fleet of some 18 inshore line boats.
