Our Special Events programme shows anglers can make a difference by combining the three elements : sports, science and conservation.
Historically anecdotal evidence has long suggested several species of shark in Scottish waters required protection from exploitation, but with little scientific data regarding their quantity, size, sex, distribution etc. government and agencies were reluctant to act.
However, in 2012 the Scottish Government acted and introduced a Special Instrument banning the landing of 26 species of shark – the importance of SSACN’s Scottish Shark Tagging Programme and the contributions of our Volunteers was recognised by the Fisheries Minister.
Thanks to the on-going work of the Volunteers, we continue to gather the data required to help inform government initiatives such as Marine Protected Areas and to provide fisheries managers with a better understanding of stock issues.
Look out for additional Events following the appointment of our new Community Outreach Project Officer.
