In the following article, David McNair highlights the the benefits angling, the challenges it can provide and how it can contribute to the health of individuals and society.

All that is really needed to round off the experience – is FISH – that’s why SSACN is trying to ensure the future of our sport by getting politicians and fisheries managers to put the interests of fish high on the agenda and focus on the regeneration of stocks rather than their pure exploitation.

Why Angling ? – David McNair.

Probably the biggest participant sport in the world Anglers can continue participating from the earliest age they can hold a Rod until old age reluctantly forces them to pack away their tackle. Angling holds no barriers for the sexes either, many record fish have been captured by female anglers.

Angling provides opportunity for either relaxation or adrenaline pumping excitement sometimes within minutes of each other, one minute sitting by the bank enjoying the sunshine and surroundings the next using all your skills and energy to land the fish of a lifetime.

If you like good company, angling is the sport for you conversely if you enjoy solitude Angling is still the sport for you.

If you like to develop your skills to the highest level Angling will develop personal discipline, planning ,research skills, fitness, problem solving.

Creating solutions to angling problems will lead you into fields you never imagined; sciences ranging from simple mathematics to physics, chemistry, biology; communication of this information supports development of better social interaction.

If you just want to relax simply pick a spot cast in put your feet up switch off and enjoy the tranquility.

If you are interested in issues regarding the environment and state of the eco systems anglers are at the forefront of research and development to regenerate stocks of once plentiful species. Anglers are often the first to report on changes (especially adverse) within the environment.

Within Scotland access and opportunity to fish abounds from city centers to the remote highlands along with a phenomenal range of species to target.

What type of angling is for you? Well stocked and managed fisheries catering specifically for Anglers who want to simply step out for a couple of hours to experience some quality fishing or secluded spots that appear never to have been fished before.

What sort of fish would you like to catch? Large hard fighting fish or small and numerous; Fish for the table or fish for sport. The choice is yours!

When can you fish? Twenty four seven 365 days a year with such a range of species and venues the only limiting factors are yourself and a few seasonal restrictions to ensure regeneration of stock levels.

Starting angling is comparatively cheap -  a rod, a reel, some line, some hooks and some weights are all that may be needed. Starter kits are comparatively cheaper than many other sports or pastimes.

How do you gain access to this veritable feast of opportunity? Simply join or form a club, access tuition via a trained coach, set standards that ensure your angling is done in a safe and enjoyable manner, make friendships that last decades and experience a lifestyle that opens out onto new horizons with every trip.

If Carlsberg did sport it would be angling.
