Another negative view of UK stocks

| August 7, 2010

A recently released study, Fish Dependence, by the New Economics Foundation and the European lobbying group Ocean 2012 says that the UK fishing industry cannot cope with demand because it has supplies which only last for seven months of the year.

The report is argues that a full reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the only answer to fishermen running out of quota before new catch allocations come.

The report highlights that around 50% of all fish eaten in the EU come from non-EU waters and that in Britain, if people only ate fish from UK coastal waters, the allowable catch would have been used up by the beginning of August and consequently argues that Britons need to take a different approach when it comes to eating fish by only buying sustainable local fish and seafood.

That argument is likely to receive a mixed reception from the commercial sector as it would mean a downturn in demand for the ‘industrial’ methods of catching but a significant boost for the more ‘artisanal’.
