English and Welsh anglers to help manage fisheries

Jan 30th, 2010 | By editor | Category: SSACN Announcements

Under the Marine and Coastal Access Act, Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs) are to replace the existing Sea Fisheries Committees (SFCs) from April 2011.

Representatives of a wide range of interests with local knowledge, including commercial fishermen, sea anglers and other recreational and conservation bodies are being invited to join the executive of the IFCA Committees.

This is totally opposite to the approach being taken in Scotland, where membership of the executive of the Inshore Fisheries Groups (IFGs) is restricted solely to the commercial sector.

In the Clyde for example not only are the local commercial fishermen represented but also commercial fishermen from Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and England – but no Scottish marine recreational / conservation interests have a direct voice in the management of the inshore environment.

For more information on IFCA recruitment visit http://www.ifcamembers.co.uk/

And for more information on IFCAs themselves visit this Defra page

Information on Scotland’s IFGs may be found here.
