Halt shark decline call
Jun 12th, 2009 | By ssacn | Category: Scottish Executive NewsLABOUR CALLS FOR HALT IN DECLINE OF SHARK NUMBERS
As a shark tagging exercise gets underway in the Solway this weekend, Scottish Labour’s Elaine Murray has called for the Scottish Government to halt the serious decline in their numbers.
The Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network will use the exercise to gather data which will assist understanding of species migration, growth rates and populations.
Elaine Murray, Labour’s Environment spokesperson, said:
"Sea-anglers have reported significant losses in the numbers of sharks, ray and skates being caught and released in Scottish waters over several years.
"Sharks such as the Spurdog cannot be landed in England, but they do not enjoy the same protection in Scotland.
"The evidence show that their numbers are in serious decline and it is about time the Scottish Government acted to protect these creatures.
"I commend the Scottish Sea Angling and Conservation Network for the efforts they are making to ensure that there is reliable and up-to-date data on the numbers of these species."
