The Decline of the Clyde

Ruth Thurstan is a PhD student at the University of York studying historical changes to marine ecosystems.

Using historical records and ‘anecdotal’ information, Ruth has pieced together a picture of how the Clyde has changed over the last 100 years or so. It may be found here.

Give Fish A Chance

SSACN’s Give Fish A Chance (GFAC) initiative reflects the fact that many anglers, whilst enjoying their sport and occasionally taking a fish for the table, are keen to do what they can to ensure the minimal impact to the environment and to the fish themselves.

Give Fish A Chance consists of a series of advisory notes and voluntary measures to help anglers better understand the issues associated with taking and handling fish.

Fish sustainably, only take fish for the table which have had a chance to reproduce and have respect for those you do catch.

The pleasure of angling

The innocent recreation of fishing stands out pre-eminently above all other sports or pastimes; and its enjoyableness is in its solitude and the calm, philosophical nature is required to be successful. It begets reflection and demonstrates that all is vanity and uncertain in this life. And dissipation is out of the question in the inveterate angler, as none know better than he knows that a quick eye and steady nerve are his capital, his all, as he waits and watches for the "nibbles".

As European lawmakers we must aim for balance in all our policies. Article 47 is not about balance, it is about bureaucracy and the surveillance state. Let me assure you that we will be voting against this article.
