Norway to introduce tougher laws

| August 26, 2008

Helga Pedersen, Norway’s fisheries minister, has announced that Norway is set to introduce strict new rules for commercial fishing boats, irrespective of their nationality, which will require all fish caught within its waters to be landed at an official fishing port.

The proposal to tighten Norwegian fishing rules is being seen as a consequence of the incident where two Scottish trawlers were witnessed discarding fish in Norwegian waters.

The Minister indicated that meeting the new requirements will be a condition when obtaining licenses to fish in Norwegian waters and that during the annual EU/Norway quota negotiations Norway will be demanding further measures to reduce the discarding of joint stocks.
