Pelagic high grading to be banned
Jul 14th, 2009 | By ssacn | Category: Scottish Government NewsFisheries secretary Richard Lochhead has welcomed a new proposed high grading ban for parts of Scotland s pelagic sector.
At a meeting in London last week the EU, Norway and Faeroes agreed to implement a ban within several of the principal pelagic fisheries affecting Scotland, including mackerel, herring and horse mackerel.
From January 1 next year high grading, the practice of discarding low-value small fish in order to fill the quota allocated with higher-value big fish, will be illegal. It forms part of a wider package of pelagic control measures agreed between the three coastal States.
