Q / A on the new, reformed CFP

euAccording to the EU, the overall objective of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is to make fishing sustainable – environmentally, economically and socially.

The new policy is meant to:

  • Bring fish stocks back to sustainable levels
  • stop wasteful fishing practices
  • Provide EU citizens with a stable, secure and healthy food supply for the long term
  • Bring new prosperity to the fishing sector
  • End dependence on subsidies and
  • Create new opportunities for jobs and growth in coastal areas.

Lofty ambitions, but the history of the CFP and the machinations of various fisheries Ministers  are somewhat against them.

However, a Questions and Answers page has been created to address the core issues.
