SAS Spring clean Aberdeen beach

| March 25, 2013

Group picOn Saturday 23rd of March volunteers braved the howling winds and hail along Aberdeen Beach to take part in the Spring Beach Clean campaign run by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).

Sadly the springtime (with the current weather this term is applied lightly!!) reveals the true severity of the marine litter crisis.

The impact of winter storms and in absence of seasonal council beach cleaning operations, the accumulation of litter can be truly shocking.

The Aberdeen clean-up organised by Regional Representative Lauren Smith was just one of over 60 held around the UK over the weekend, in Aberdeen alone over 20 bags of litter were collected and much more besides including carpets and engine parts!

All involved were shocked at the sheer amount of litter in particular the volume of shredded plastics, and it is hoped to engage local surfers and beach goers alike in more frequent clean-up events.
