Scott calls for end to discards
Sep 24th, 2009 | By ssacn | Category: Scottish Government NewsSpeaking from the Scottish Parliament today, after questioning the First Minister on his government’s intentions on discards, John Scott MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, said:
“With fish stocks around Scotland at dangerously low levels, particularly in the West of Scotland and especially in the Firth of Clyde, it is vital that the Scottish Government now addresses the problem of discards.
With so many juvenile fish not reaching maturity and breeding capability, the government must now come forward with its ideas on how this wasteful and unsustainable practice be brought to an end.
The government response to the Inquiry into Future Fisheries Management must include proposals on this difficult subject if we are to have a sustainable future for our fishermen and fishing industry in Scotland. ”
