backing calls for the controversial EU Cod Recovery Plan to be renegotiated, amid fears that it could drive many fishermen out of business.

John Scott, the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, said:

“Everyone agrees that proper conservation measures are essential and there is evidence that cod stocks are recovering.”

“However, unless ways are found to increase the number of days that Scottish fishing boats can operate, then the real fear is that even more jobs will be lost in the industry.”

“Forcing people out of work and reducing our ability as a country to export sea foods, especially in the midst of a national economic crisis, cannot possibly be defended, but that is the likely consequence of the 25% cut in fishing days being forced on fishermen.”
