Sea birds failing to breed

| October 30, 2008

Three of Scotland’s iconic sea bird species have had another disastrous breeding season and their long-term future is bleak unless conditions change to give them a better chance of successful breeding according to Douglas Gilbert of RSPB Scotland.

Gilbert also said the RSPB have been reporting poor breeding seasons for 20 years and time is beginning to run out for the birds.

According to a Scottish Government spokesman, action to improve habitats will be central to the upcoming Marine Bill and the government is working closely with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to identify gaps in the current marine protected area network and how to maintain and improve the breeding success of the seabird populations.

SSACN – one of the greatest problems for the birds is the lack of fish, a pity the government will not take the necessary steps to regenerate inshore stocks by stopping the excessive discarding of non-commercial species and destruction of their habitats.
