SSACN work recognised in a Parliamentary Motion

| August 6, 2009

Dr Bill Wilson, an MSP for the West of Scotland and a member of the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee, has recently lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament recognising the work of the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network.

Dr Wilson, who for ten years worked as an ecological researcher, said:

“The conservation efforts undertaken by the SSACN have long-term economic and environmental importance. Every year, over 100,000 sea anglers come to Scotland. This contributes £150 million to the economy. A decline in fish stocks could threaten this revenue.

“Tagging is an environmentally friendly way of collecting the data required to sustainably manage fish stocks and I congratulate the SSACN on its work.”

Bill Wilson (West of Scotland) (Scottish National Party): Congratulations to the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network’s conservation efforts.

That the Parliament congratulates the Paisley-based, Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network for organising the Sharkatag event held at the Mull of Galloway; recognises the lasting scientific and economic benefit that tagging sharks will create; supports the SSACN’s efforts in regeneration of local fishing stocks and protecting Scotland as a destination for sea anglers who contribute more than £150 million per year to the Scottish economy, and also acknowledges the SSACN’s choice of tagging as an environmentally friendly way of gaining accurate data, data which will allow a more accurate correlation of information on issues relating to fishing stocks.
