Demersal fish tagging programme

A RANGE of demersal fish species have been tagged and released at various locations around Shetland as part of project on data-deficient species by the NAFC Marine Centre’s Marine Science and Technology department.

Plaice, lemon sole, monkfish and megrim have all been tagged and a small reward plus the value of the fish will be paid on return. All returned tags will also be entered into an annual lottery with the chance of winning £100.

The project on data deficient fish species runs for two-years and is an industry-led initiative, which is funded by the Scottish Government. The data gathered during the study will be made available to science and industry to assist in the monitoring, assessment and management of these commercially important stocks.
