US retailers sustainable strategy

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Kroger Co, one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States have announced that they will be jointly developing a sustainable wild seafood strategy.

WWF will assist Kroger in assessing the current sourcing of the retailer’s top 20 wild-caught seafood species and will also help Kroger lead the discussion with suppliers to improve practices across the supply chain and urging them to adopt higher standards in the trade and harvesting of seafood.

The process includes evaluating Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for wild species.

According to Bill Fox, VP and MD of WWF’s fisheries programme.  “As one of the largest traditional food retailers in the US, Kroger can play an important role in transforming the way seafood is harvested

“It is through collaborations like this that we can achieve important conservation goals to protect our oceans and ensure that retailers like Kroger can rely on a continued supply of seafood products into the future.”

“Kroger is enthusiastic about this project and what it can mean for our customers,” said Mark Van Buskirk, VP for Meat and Seafood for The Kroger Co. “Our goal is that our customers and their children can enjoy fresh, sustainable seafood for generations to come.”
