What a surprise

THE  National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) has said it is surprised – even shocked –  by  the latest assessment  of North Sea and West of Scotland saithe which indicates all is not well for the stock.

The NFFO claim the saithe stock had been consistent with a fishery maximum sustainable yield for four or five years as the biomass was above and fishing mortality below precautionary limits.

But they also said that In the last couple of years, the biomass has dipped below the precautionary reference point and fishing mortality began to climb.

So why are they surprised ? If stocks go down and you carry on exploiting them at the same rate, it seems obvious all will not be well !
